Top transport officials are refusing to confirm giving Johannesburg the green light to go ahead with the Bus Rapid Transit System at the end of the month.

The first phase of the BRT will start at the end of the month despite ongoing negotiations with the taxi industry.

Officials from the Transport Department and the City of Johannesburg will meet over the BRT on Friday.

It comes as Johannesburg Mayor Amos Masondo announced earlier this week Rea Vaya busses would be on the city’s streets by the end of the month.

The taxi industry has reacted with outrage to the news, saying government is negotiating in bad faith.

Taxi bosses have accused government of trying to divide the industry by holding talks with different representatives.

The South African National Taxi Council and the United Taxi Forum have threatened to head to court in a bid to stop the BRT from going ahead.
