Delcan has been awarded a US$5 million contract by Johannesburg Roads Agency (Pty) Ltd, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to manage its systems integration and ITS deployment. The project, being led by Stewart Scott International (SSI), a DHV company, includes system management for ITS deployment comprising software and system integration. System integration will focus on urban traffic signal management, motorway traffic management, traveller information, air quality, parking management and specifications for hardware.

The SSI/Delcan team also will be providing specifications for systems which will integrate with other ITS elements and system management services for the public transport services. The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) comprises 122 km of roads, 150 stations, 420 articulated buses and 413 feeder buses. Additionally, the SSI/Delcan team is preparing tender documents for bus fleet management, integrated ticketing system and vehicle probe test.

Prior to being awarded the system deployment contract, the SSI/Delcan team assisted the Johannesburg Roads Agency with the development of an ITS Road Map that provided comprehensive guidelines and recommendation for moving forward with the next phase of system deployment.

Commenting on the contract, Joe Lam, president of the International Systems Business for Delcan said “When this ITS integration project is completed in 2010, it will greatly aid in reducing traffic congestion and improve traveler mobility in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. It will be ready to welcome the tens of thousands of people visiting the City during the 2010 FIFA World Cup event.”
