Transport Minister Jeff Radebe yesterday said a consolidated empowerment charter for the transport sector would be launched soon to address government concerns that its transformation drive in the industry was not getting the support it had hoped for. Radebe told the World Air Cargo Organisation, the fourth-largest representative body of air cargo operators worldwide, that the charter would spell out the transformation agenda for the industry. He warned that there had to be “a greater level of commitment to these goals” and they should be seen as a strategic business imperative rather than “just a compliance regime element”. He said the government would also look at a range of initiatives to increase the number and size of local operators. Air cargo had doubled in the past 10 years, growing 8,5% annually, compared with the10% average annual growth of air travel in SA.
