A team of Cape Town officials have returned from a fact-finding mission to Johannesburg where they learned lessons about the implementation of that city’s Bus Rapid Transit system.

The City of Cape Town plans to work closely with Johannesburg ahead of the rollout of Cape Town’s IRT.

Johannesburg launched its controversial Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit System last month amid strong objections from taxi role-players.

City spokesperson Kylie Hatton said they planned to roll out the Integrated Rapid Transit system during the course of next year.

“What we’re focusing on in Cape Town at the moment is to meet certain of our host city requirements then roll out the service requirements in 2010.”
