Plans for the expansion of the Newbridge park-and-ride site in Bath and a bus rapid transit link to the city centre have been approved.

Some private gardens would be subject to compulsory purchase orders in order to build the bus lane.

Bath and North East Somerset council said the scheme is needed to combat congestion in the city.

More than 3,000 people signed a petition against the plan. It now goes to the government for consideration.

On 8 July a motion to approve the application was rejected by six votes to five.

Another motion to approve it was then deadlocked at five votes each leaving the door open for the council to reapply.

A council spokesman said Wednesday’s decision was now subject to approval by the Secretary of State.
