The government is optimistic it will resolve differences with the taxi industry over the rollout of the bus rapid transit (BRT) system.

Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele said on Friday that the government and the taxi industry had given a joint task team until the end of next month to draw up an interim proposal on how to resolve their differences; they should have a final plan by the end of October.

At the weekend he said he was confident agreement would be reached.

The taxi industry has been at war with the government for months, and President Jacob Zuma had pledged ahead of the elections to review the system.

Ndebele said his department met with the taxi industry last month and they were not “post conflict… we are past that”.
