Traffic authorities are clamping down on unroadworthy buses and taxis with at least 30 being taken off the road in Durban on Thursday.

Operation Thatiskorokoro started at 4am on Thursday at the Durban bus depot, and provincial transport department spokesperson Nonkululeko Mbatha said they were targeting public transporters.

“Over 52 buses were inspected and of that 22 were suspended for unroadworthiness,” she said.

Another 43 mini-bus taxis were inspected and eight were suspended.

Mbatha said in just a few hours, 98 fines were issued and two drunk drivers caught.

Another motorist was arrested for driving without a licence.

She said the operation was continuing and stressed that the department would “hit hard” on buses and taxis. – Sapa
