The new national development plan for Mexico envisages a colossal US$235 billion to be spent on infrastructure between now and 2012. Of this, a sizeable chunk would be spent on highway construction with plans to build and upgrade some 17,598km of road according to Business News Americas. The aim is to improve the proportion of federal highway that is classed as being in good condition from 72-90% as well as halving the accident rate. Some 5,472km of trunk routes, 6,788km of non highway routes and 4,000km of rural roads as well as 1,388km of complementary works would be targeted under the scheme.
