The government would guarantee all jobs lost by taxi drivers on routes which were incorporated into the bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, but this would not include foreigners or illegal workers, deputy transport minister Jeremy Cronin said on Wednesday. Noting that the government was looking at ways to subsidise the industry, Cronin said there would be three shifts a day for taxi drivers on buses. The cabinet also warned the industry that it would not be held to ransom by violent protests by taxi operators against BRT’s implementation. – Donwald Pressly.
