Aviation exercises are being conducted in the area of Green Point Stadium in the Western Cape to beef up aerial security for the 2010 World Cup, police said on Sunday.

“Operation Green Point is being simulated to test the security forces’ capacity and ability to deal with aerial threats.

“This operation is an excellent training opportunity for the security personnel to be deployed during the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup,” said spokeswoman Director Sally de Beer.

She said it was a joint operation by the South African Police Service and the South African Air Force.

“…There have been some complaints from community members residing in the vicinity of Green Point Stadium… The security forces regret any inconvenience caused,” she said.

“We request the community of Cape Town to be patient and to remember that ultimately, their safety is of the utmost importance to us and our present operations are aimed at securing public safety,” De Beer said.
