The City of Johannesburg says it is confident an agreement with the taxi industry will be reached soon on the feeder system for Rea Vaya buses.

The first phase of the Bus Rapid Transit System was launched at the end of last month amid fears of violence in the taxi industry.

Taxi bosses who feel they were not properly consulted on the system have been in talks with the government.

The agreement could result in taxi drivers transporting people to BRT stations.

About 16 000 commuters use Rea Vaya buses daily.

Johannesburg Transport MMC Rehana Moosajee said efforts to bring the entire industry onboard would continue.

“The negotiations with the taxi industry are seriously underway and we look forward to be able to find a deal with the affected taxi operators relatively soon,” said Mosajee.
